This work attempts to reconstruct the archaic Sumerian system of constellations that made up the Lunar Path before its later Babylonian reform and artificial reduction to 12 signs. Based on an analysis of astronomical constants, the biological cycles of terrestrial fauna, and fundamental mythological archetypes, the sky’s 13-part architecture is reconstructed.
This work proves that the Sumerian star catalog was not a local agricultural calendar but a universal cosmogonic map on a planetary and metaphysical scale, linking the geometric laws of the Cosmos with biology and the structure of the world.

Sumerian Constellations Beyond a Local Agricultural Calendar

An approach has become entrenched in modern Assyriology and the history of astronomy that reduces Sumerian constellation names to the local, everyday needs of Mesopotamia — the periods of sowing, harvesting, and river flooding. Yet this approach completely ignores the fact that the starry sky is a universal constant for the entire planet Earth.
Sumerian scholars thought in terms of cosmic geometry. By dividing the sky into three great zones — the Path of Enlil (north), the Path of Anu (equator), and the Path of Ea/Enki (south) — they recorded the global coordinates of the Earth’s axial tilt and the movements of celestial bodies. This study restores the Sumerian sky map to its original sacred and metaphysical scope.
The 13th Month and the Lunisolar Cycle
A regular lunar year (354 days) does not coincide with a solar year (365.24 days). The physics of our planetary system fundamentally does not fit into a system of 12, since the ratio between the cycles is:
365.24 ÷ 29.53 = 12.36…
The number 13 is an objective astronomical “seam” between the cycles of the Moon and the Sun. To maintain calendar balance, the Sumerians regularly introduced an additional thirteenth month — Dirig.
The true Lunar Path, before it was distorted by Babylonian mathematics, consisted of exactly 13 stations through which the Moon made its actual, physical circuit of the celestial sphere.
Sumerian Lunar Path and the Biological Code of Its 13 Stations
An honest reconstruction, cleared of later distortions, restores the authentic Sumerian sequence of constellations:
- Pleiades (MUL.MUL) — The Primordial Point, the Gates of Manifestation that set a world age in motion.
- Bull of Heaven (GUD.AN.NA) — The impulsive, creative force of the manifested Cosmos.
- Elder Uru Anna (URU.AN.NA / ŠI.BU) — The wise Architect and Observer of the sky, a point of temporal stabilization and free play at the boundary of the ecliptic.
- Twins (MAŠ.TAB.BA) — The Two Pillars, a cosmic portal that secures the stability of the manifested world.
- Sacred Turtle (AL.LUL) — The Foundation of the World, the sacred support that bears the solid earth and the dome of the celestial waters.
- Predatory Dog (UR.GU.LA) — The Guardian of the Threshold, a wild cosmic predator that tests the strength of the Universe.
- Furrow — Virgo (AB.SIN) — The Womb of the Mother (Ninhursag), the central geometric and sacred reference point of the entire system.
- Scorpion (GIR.TAB) — The Guardian of the lower gates, the force of transformation.
- Serpent Nirah (MUŠ) — The Keeper of cosmic boundaries and the borders between the manifest and the hidden.
- Pabilsag (PA.BIL.SAG) — The Archer, directing the vector of cosmic will through the darkness.
- Goat-Fish (SUḪUR.MAŠ) — The force emerging from the depths of Abzu, the primordial ocean of wisdom.
- Great Enki (GU.LA) — Master of Sacred Knowledge, pouring out the cosmic waters of being.
- Swallow (SIM.MAH) — The Great Transition, the point at which the planetary cycle closes, is cleansed, and restarts.
The Womb-Furrow and the Biological Code of the Constellations
Analysis of the restored map reveals a strict geometric pattern.
The constellation of the Furrow (No. 7), embodying the womb of the mother goddess Ninhursag, divides the entire system exactly in half. If the beginning of the Furrow’s “month” is taken as the zero point of conception, the distance from it to the two animal totem constellations corresponds exactly to their actual biological gestation periods:
- The Goat-Fish (No. 11) is 5 stations away from the beginning of the Furrow. The biological gestation period in goats is exactly 5 months.
- The Bull of Heaven (No. 2) is 9 stations away from the beginning of the Furrow. The biological gestation period in cows is exactly 9 months.
Thus, the system clearly divides the totems into the domestic world of humans (governed by internal gestation cycles that start at the Womb-Furrow) and the cosmogonic world of external forces (where the Turtle serves as the foundation, the Predatory Dog as the guardian of the threshold, and the Swallow as the end of time…).
The Sumerian Lunar Path as a Sacred Cosmogonic Map
The 13-part Sumerian Lunar Path is a monumental testament to ancient metaphysics, in which the laws of Earth’s biology were organically integrated into the geometry of the Cosmos. This reconstruction restores the sky to its original sacred architecture.
