This commentary on Quran 2:153–176 reflects on trial, conscience, and the nature of Divine justice.
It examines spiritual growth through suffering, the responsibility of those who possess knowledge, and the question of whether Allah is understood through fear — or through wisdom and love.

Quran 2:153–154

153. O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allāh is with the patient.
154. And do not say about those who are killed in the way of Allāh, “They are dead.” Rather, they are alive, but you perceive [it] not. *
Prayer from the Heart
The verse is true.
Remember to pray in your own words, from your heart. Prayer purifies thoughts and frees them from lower desires and from the impulse to act against conscience. Turning to Allah refines the soul and fills it with goodness.
True prayer is not mechanical repetition but a living dialogue between the human soul and its Creator.
Quran 2:155–157
155. And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient,
156. Who, when disaster strikes them, say, “Indeed we belong to Allāh, and indeed to Him we will return.”
157. Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.
Trials as a Means of Growth
It is indeed so. Both suffering and joy are granted by Divine will so that the soul may grow — to distinguish between light and darkness and to gain strength.
Now the greatest test has arrived — the final book of the Almighty has been revealed. Yet religious authorities, political leaders, and the media remain silent. And many wait for their instructions — although this examination concerns every individual soul.
The trial is not collective only; it is personal.
Quran 2:159–160
159. Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs and guidance after We made it clear for the people in the Scripture – those are cursed by Allāh and cursed by those who curse,
160. Except for those who repent and correct themselves and make evident [what they concealed]. Those – I will accept their repentance, and I am the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.
Responsibility to Speak
May those among religious leaders who read these verses find the inner strength to speak openly about the message of the Almighty revealed in 2019.
When you have knowledge and choose to remain silent, it becomes a question of your conscience before humanity and before the Almighty.
Quran 2:161–162
161. Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers – upon them will be the curse of Allāh and of the angels and the people, all together,
162. Abiding eternally therein. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved.
Nature of Mercy
Is the Almighty in your understanding truly as described here? Eternal torment from the Absolute of Mercy?
Every person transitions into a new life after death. An atheist who lives according to conscience can be closer to the Almighty than someone who calls themselves a believer.
The purpose is not to frighten non-believers, but to explain the sacred texts and the evidence of the Almighty’s existence. One who does not help awaken others is not yet awakened themselves.
Quran 2:163–164
163. And your god is one God. There is no deity [worthy of worship] except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
164. Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allāh has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and earth are signs for a people who use reason.
Divine Unity and the Voice of Conscience
These verses are true.
The Almighty is One, and He alone has power over the universe.
People who have not matured to form their own judgment may follow doctrines shaped by darker interpretations — presenting Allah as exclusive, severe, and intolerant, rather than as the One whose wisdom and love embraces all.
Conscience is a voice of the Almighty. Only through it can we find the way to truth and recognize the deceptions of those who falsify the teachings.
The final times have begun — awaken everyone.
Quran 2:165–167
165. And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allāh as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allāh. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allāh. And if only they who have wronged would consider [that] when they see the punishment, [they will be certain] that all power belongs to Allāh and that Allāh is severe in punishment.
166. [And they should consider that] when those who have been followed disassociate themselves from those who followed [them], and they [all] see the punishment, and cut off from them are the ties [of relationship],
167. Those who followed will say, “If only we had another turn [at worldly life] so we could disassociate ourselves from them as they have disassociated themselves from us.” Thus will Allāh show them their deeds as regrets upon them. And they are never to emerge from the Fire.
Allah as Teacher
Allah is a Teacher. He gives the necessary lessons so that a person may realize certain truths.
When a soul falls behind in spiritual growth, the Divine Program intensifies the lesson, guiding the person to recognize essential truths.
If people forget the main goal of earthly life, become divided, indifferent, godless, turn away from faith and indulge in vice — they receive a harsher lesson to return them to the path of truth.
A nation that departs from Allah becomes vulnerable to its enemies. Its cities may be destroyed and plundered. Those who endure these trials and pass into the next life are given the opportunity to recognize their mistakes. Their souls are purified through understanding.
If Allah did not support souls through different stages of learning, they would not grow.
Allah does not punish, avenge, or curse. He gives every soul freedom of choice.
If a soul ignores the Creator’s guidance and wastes its life, even returning to dust is not punishment — it is the soul’s own decision.
The Almighty is absolute justice. He does not force light and does not compel darkness. He grants the full cycle of learning so that the soul may choose.
The wisdom of Allah is absolute — and so is His love.
Quran 2:168–169
168. O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
169. He only orders you to evil and immorality and to say about Allāh what you do not know.
Inner and Outer Darkness
These verses are profound.
There are two kinds of darkness: inner and outer.
Inner darkness consists of the lower desires of the human soul. It is our greatest enemy. Through divine light and spiritual effort it may be overcome.
The less darkness remains, the more light arises within.
Outer darkness cannot accomplish anything without the permission of the Almighty. All remains under His power.
Above all scriptures stands the voice of the Almighty — conscience. Conscience cannot be falsified. Through it the world can free the scriptures from lies and distortions.
Quran 2:170–171
170. And when it is said to them, “Follow what Allāh has revealed,” they say, “Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing.” Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided?
171. The example of those who disbelieve is like that of one who shouts at what hears nothing but calls and cries [i.e., cattle or sheep] – deaf, dumb and blind, so they do not understand.
Tradition and Independent Thought
These verses are beautiful.
It is important to honor the traditions of our ancestors. Ancient customs often contain accumulated wisdom. They are like roots nourishing a tree. Without roots, a people weakens.
Yet one must also learn from past mistakes and not follow them blindly. Those who repeat errors without reflection have not yet matured.
A people with too few independent thinkers inevitably weakens and dissolves among other nations.
Quran 2:174–176
174. Indeed, they who conceal what Allāh has sent down of the Book and exchange it for a small price – those consume not into their bellies except the Fire. And Allāh will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them. And they will have a painful punishment.
175. Those are the ones who have exchanged guidance for error and forgiveness for punishment. How patient they are for [i.e., in pursuit of] the Fire!
176. That is [deserved by them] because Allāh has sent down the Book in truth. And indeed, those who differ over the Book are in extreme dissension.
Distortion and the Image of God
The verse addresses those who conceal or distort revelation.
Distortions may be recognised through attentive reading of the Quran in light of conscience.
When the Allah is portrayed as eternally vengeful, merciless, or tyrannical, faith becomes fear rather than trust.
Images of terror have entered various religious traditions over centuries, shaping perceptions of God in ways that contradict absolute wisdom and mercy.
True faith rests on confidence that the Creator is just, wise, and not in contradiction with Himself.
