The soul is like a garden: what is cultivated grows, what is neglected withers.Charity loses its purity when it becomes a bargain for reward.Through trials, conscience leads the soul toward deeper growth.

Quran 2:264–267 — The Inner Garden of the Soul, Harvest, and Pure Giving

264. O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders [of it] or injury as does one who spends his wealth [only] to be seen by the people and does not believe in Allāh and the Last Day. His example is like that of a [large] smooth stone upon which is dust and is hit by a downpour that leaves it bare. They are unable [to keep] anything of what they have earned. And Allāh does not guide the disbelieving people.

265. And the example of those who spend their wealth seeking means to the approval of Allāh and assuring [reward for] themselves is like a garden on high ground which is hit by a downpour – so it yields its fruits in double. And [even] if it is not hit by a downpour, then a drizzle [is sufficient]. And Allāh, of what you do, is Seeing.

266. Would one of you like to have a garden of palm trees and grapevines underneath which rivers flow in which he has from every fruit? But he is afflicted with old age and has weak [i.e., immature] offspring, and it is hit by a whirlwind containing fire and is burned. Thus does Allāh make clear to you [His] verses that you might give thought.

267. O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allāh is Free of need and Praiseworthy. *

Every Soul Contains a Garden

A glorious verse.

When you gather the harvest, praise the Almighty. When you feed the hungry, you share from the harvest of the Almighty.

Every soul contains a garden. As you treat your own garden, and as you do good from the garden entrusted to you, so will you receive from the garden of the Almighty.

Every person has an inner essence, and the garden is its image. The envious person does not rejoice in the harvest of his neighbor. Yet one source waters all gardens. Enmity creates a lack of water.

Some shine with illusion while drowning in sin. Others may glow dimly in the eyes of the world, yet they overcome their fear. Self-interest and vanity destroy the soul’s movement toward eternity. Blessed is the one in whom thought and soul live in harmony.

The soul is tested through fear, hunger, loss, and difficulty. These trials reveal what is growing inside the garden and what still needs to be cleansed, watered, and strengthened.

Deeds are seeds placed into this inner soil. Some are scattered in vanity. Some are planted with patience, conscience, and love. Not every seed sprouts immediately, yet nothing sincere is lost.

What is neglected becomes barren. What is tended grows.

Quran 2:270–274 — Charity Without Bargaining and the Wealth of the Soul

270. And whatever you spend of expenditures or make of vows – indeed, Allāh knows of it. And for the wrongdoers there are no helpers.

271. If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you, and He will remove from you some of your misdeeds [thereby]. And Allāh, of what you do, is [fully] Aware.

272. Not upon you, [O Muḥammad], is [responsibility for] their guidance, but Allāh guides whom He wills. And whatever good you [believers] spend is for yourselves, and you do not spend except seeking the face [i.e., approval] of Allāh. And whatever you spend of good – it will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.

273. [Charity is] for the poor who have been restricted for the cause of Allāh, unable to move about in the land. An ignorant [person] would think them self-sufficient because of their restraint, but you will know them by their [characteristic] sign. They do not ask people persistently [or at all]. And whatever you spend of good – indeed, Allāh is Knowing of it.

274. Those who spend their wealth [in Allāh’s way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly – they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.

Charity Without Bargaining: Pure Intention

A glorious verse.

Do not do good for the sake of reward from Allah, but from the desire of your own soul. To do good for reward is still self-interest.

Yet if you have not grown to the point where your soul desires to do good without self-interest, then do good from the desire to grow into selflessness. This is how dark temptations are overcome in the soul: gradually, darkness is displaced, and the soul is filled with light on the true path.

True righteousness begins beyond ritual direction. It begins when a person’s intention becomes clean, when good is done not for display, not for repayment, and not as a bargain with Heaven, but because the soul has learned to recognize the voice of the Almighty within itself.

Gratitude for Trials and the Growth of the Soul

Give thanks to the Almighty for the barriers given to you in the battle between darkness and light within your soul. These barriers are not meaningless. They show where the soul must grow.

This is the straight path, because the soul always grows together with the voice of the Creator — love, conscience, and reason.

In everyone there is the voice of the Creator. You are always together. Remember this when you decide how to act.

The Soul as the Only True Wealth

If you lose everything, do not torment yourself with despair. Do not curse fate; pray.

You cannot carry even a coin with you beyond this life. Your one true wealth is your soul. Cultivate it.
